Whitmer meets with government, business leaders on Europe trip

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer conducted her second international trade mission of the year this week, spending two days in Austria and Latvia meeting with both business and government leaders. Whitmer, who spoke with The Associated Press upon returning to Michigan on Friday, said the international trips are “an important part of the job,” as the state looks to grow relationships and “secure additional economic opportunities for our state.” In Latvia, the second-term Democratic governor and close ally of U.S. President Joe Biden met with Latvian President Egils Levits and other ranking officials before visiting Michigan national guard troops stationed in the country. Latvia is “Michigan’s European ally,” Whitmer said. The partnership between the country and state has reached 30 years. Former Gov. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers addressed one of their major positions of need Friday by signing former Houston Texans safety Jonathan Owens.Owens, who turns 28 on July 22, is coming off a career-best season in which he started 17 games. DENVER (KDVR) -- Temperatures are rising, spring is in full bloom and bears are waking up from their long winter naps. That means they're hungry and looking for food. Colorado Parks and Wildlife said it has received 173 reports of bear activity in 25 counties so far this year. Many of the calls are coming from residential areas, as bears are attracted to the smell of food from unsecured trash cans and bird feeders. “Every time a bear gets a treat, a bird feeder, a hummingbird feeder, or trash, it teaches the bear that people mean food,” said Matt Yamashita, CPW’s area wildlife manager for Area 8, which covers Aspen, Glenwood Springs and Eagle and Pitkin counties. “People who think that it’s one time, no big deal, are totally wrong. DENVER (KDVR) -- The same workers who can afford to live far from their city jobs are the same workers who stopped commuting entirely once the COVID pandemic hit. An ApartmentList study analyzed commuter trends in every U.S. metro area using U.S. Census data to measure the change through the 2010s and early 2020s. (WSVN) — As Mother’s Day 2023 approaches, a mother in Central Broward continues to wait for justice a year after, authorities said, her daughter was shot in a drive-by shooting.According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, 20-year-old Dru’Niyyia Griffin was sitting in a car with a friend outside a house in Northwest 14th Court in unincorporated Central Broward, near Fort Lauderdale, when another vehicle drove by and fired multiple shots at her parked car, critically injuring her.The date of the incident was May 8, 2022. A Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts employee has been arrested after he landed on the wrong side of the law.According to the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office, 57-year-old Scott Kessler stole cash from people who came to the office to pay off their traffic fines and citations while working at the North Dade Justice Center.Prosecutors said the suspect pocketed between $4,000 and $5,000.Kessler was busted in a sting when undercover police officers paid off phony fines with marked bills.Kessler faces three felony charges, including conspiracy to commit organized scheme to defraud.Latest news
