A Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputy was fired more than a year after he was involved in a fatal crash — and just days after the Modesto Bee disclosed that he had been found primarily at fault.Eric Fulmer was driving 121 mph in the fog before his patrol car broadsided a car at a T-intersection near Newman on Jan. 9, 2022, an investigation by the California Highway Patrol found. The Bee reported last week on the CHP’s findings, which it obtained through a public records request.A statement from Sheriff Jeff Dirkse said Fulmer’s employment was terminated Wednesday, March 29, for undisclosed violations of department policy related to the crash.Fulmer had finished his shift and was driving home around 7 that Sunday morning when he heard a call about a police officer involved a fight in Newman. Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee said Friday that he was diagnosed with a “serious but curable form of cancer” after a tumor was found in one of his tonsils.Kildee, 64, said he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma that was detected very early by doctors and that he will have surgery in a few weeks to remove it.“The prognosis after surgery and treatment is excellent,” the Flint-area Democrat said in a statement. “I am going to get through this. I’m going to beat cancer.”Kildee said doctors have advised him that recovery from surgery could take a few weeks. His office will be open while he is away from Congress for a period of time, he said.Kildee, who has served in the U.S. House since 2013, sits on the House Ways and Means committee in addition to being a member of the Budget Committee.Kildee represents Michigan’s 8th Congressional District, which was redrawn last year to include the city of Flint. CENTENNIAL, Colo. (KDVR) -- A man accused of shooting and killing his ex-wife told police he was "trying to protect his kids," an arrest affidavit said. David Lechner, 45, was taken into custody at East Orchard Road and South Havana Street after 8 a.m. on Thursday. Police said that he had several stab wounds and was taken to the hospital for treatment, the affidavit said. Zoo Miami’s Animal Health team members have successfully released a juvenile Green Sea Turtle back into the wild after being treated for hook injuries. On Wednesday, the turtle was released from Bill Baggs State Park on Key Biscayne, following a two-week stay at Zoo Miami’s Sea Turtle Hospital.The turtle was brought to the hospital by an FWC officer on Mar. 13 after being hooked by a recreational fisherman off of the Dania Beach Pier. Upon arrival, Dr. Marisa Bezjian, Associate Veterinarian at Zoo Miami, removed the hook from the turtle’s mouth. Further examination revealed two additional hooks lodged in the turtle’s esophagus, which were also successfully removed by Dr. Bezjian.After making a full recovery, the turtle was deemed fit for release. However, the incident highlights the ongoing challenge that sea turtles face with unintentional injuries caused by fishermen. Several streets were closed Friday afternoon due to a fatal crash that involved a police vehicle. City of Miami Police arrived at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Northwest 28th Avenue and 25th Street just before noon. https://twitter.com/MiamiPD/status/16418384433019453447Skyforce hovered over the scene where a truck lay on its side on a fence that was damaged. According to officials, two officers were involved in the crash as a cruiser somehow collided with another vehicle. They are investigating whether the officers were in one vehicle or were separate. A third vehicle was also involved and had its airbag deployed.Those involved in the crash were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment. Both officers are said to be in stable condition. Police have temporarily closed Northwest 24th through 26th Avenues between 27th to 29th Street. Emergency crews in Lynn are working to put out a fire that burned through several vehicles and appeared to spread to at least two structures on Chestnut Street.The Lynn Fire Department said it was called to the area of 109 Chestnut Street on Friday afternoon where they found a 2-alarm fire burning upon arrival.Around 1:40 p.m., a SKY7 camera spotted firefighters working to put out flames that had burned through what appeared to be a box truck and a car.Both vehicles were tucked between two multistory structures that were also affected.
